Editorial Review:

Detonators. Assassins. Money. Mysterious characters. The reader (and reviewer!) will be on tenterhooks when glued to the pages of “You Never Live Until You Die” by ET Milligan. Reassurance is at hand, though: Detective Blake Cutter and the Miami PD are on the beat (and in Haiti), keeping the community and the reader safe from harm. More than that – Detective Cutter on the trail of organized crime in a suspense filled race against evil. The stakes are high, and the vivid characterization makes the book an especially absorbing read. Each police officer/secondary character has a distinct personality and advances the storyline, despite their united purpose. The villain (remember, no spoilers!) is well-crafted with a resoundingly evil motive. The novel is Book 4 in a series, but can be read and enjoyed as a standalone, as this reviewer has done.

The complexity of the storyline is another bonus, taking the plot out of the realm of standard police drama, and adding personal tragedy, mystery, and…tax issues. Yes, financial crime is also a part of the intrigue in a nod to the old adage of “follow the money”. There are subplots to keep track of, but the resolution of these is satisfying and the ongoing themes will tempt the reader to follow the series!

At times the reader may feel that some of the dialogue is more exposition than conversation, but other readers may find this approach provides valuable detail. The pacing of the novel moves the story along swiftly, and also provides some humour along the way.

“You Never Live Until you Die” by ET Milligan is a complex and absorbing mystery, with Detective Blake Cutter front and center as a memorable addition to the ranks of detective heroes. The international settings add a further dimension to a great adventure yarn with several twists and turns.
