Diomedes in Kyprios

by Gregory Michael Nixon

Audiobook Narrator: Simon de Denet

Blurb:

This is a historically-based novel with authentic, mythic, and fictional characters interacting across the extraordinary panorama after the Fall of Troy and the Hittite Empire during the Bronze Age Collapse. Diomedes leads his Akhaians (Achaeans) to the Isle of Kyprios (now Cyprus) to meet his lost love, Lieia, the ex-queen of the Hittites. Kyprios is where the Peoples of the Sea have gathered before their final assaults on Canaan and Aigyptos (Egypt).

But Diomedes unexpectedly meets the avatar of the Goddess Aphrodite at her Temple in Paphos, the city of her birth. Will she take him from Lieia? Will his wanderings end, or will he head back to sea to seek redemption from the past in the further unknown? Aphrodite must also deal with the beautiful, impetuous youth, Adonis, who swears he would die for her.

The Bronze Age Collapse was a time of such chaos that empires fell, royalty was overthrown, palaces and temples were destroyed, and the hierarchy of the gods was doubted, yet people's self-reliance emerged like never before, and the ancient Great Goddess of the Cycles of Time, who had been suppressed, began to regain her former dominance.

Author Bio:

Gregory M. Nixon is a retired university professor who, after spending his professional years publishing academic papers, was pleased to discover he still had an active imagination. He moved alone to a nice cottage overlooking magnificent Okanagan Lake in western Canada to create his mythico-historical novels set after the Trojan War and the fall of the Hittite Empire during the Bronze Age Collapse. Nigel, an outdoor cat, also sometimes lives with him.

Book Excerpt:

It did not take long until he heard whispers and bodily movements. The fire had burned low but there was a sliver of moon. He silently withdrew the iron dagger and watched intently. Three figures stealthily approached his sleeping place, javelins poised. But before they had come close enough for him to leap from his cover, behind them Sa-ba-as-se cried out, “No, he is our guest!” The three stopped, torn between killing their intended victim or turning on the boy. This was the moment. Diomede burst from his cover and slashed the throat of the bigger, bearded man, knowing better than to risk losing his weapon by sticking the blade into a body. “What, traitor!” cried the ugly man just as Diomede drove the iron blade under his chin up into the brain. Both men fell, their lifeblood pulsing from them as they helplessly gurgled in horror knowing death was upon them. The scraggly woman dropped her spear and turned to run, but Diomede grasped her by the hair with his left hand. “Not so fast, my fine beauty,” he hissed and drove the blade through her back and into her heart. He withdrew the knife as she died with a cry and fell to earth.

He faced the young man, dagger dripping blood. “Am I to die too?” Asked Sa-ba-as-se without apparent fear.

“No, you are not,” Diomedes smiled with satisfaction. “In my land, we also honour the tradition of welcoming and protecting guest-friends, just as you have honoured and sought to protect me. Saba, you shall be my friend and my companion on the journey to Kyprios, the isle you know as Alasiya. Let us throw these corpses on the fire to make a burnt offering for the hidden gods above with the pleasing scent of roast meat, whilst the gods below will feast on their remains.”
