Editorial Review:
Editorial Review: “Next Time”
Author: Randy Brown
Miriam needs time to think about her relationship with William. Like, one thousand years (give or take). And this reviewer is right there with her, utterly gripped by the ultimate time travel romance, where Miriam appears in William’s life and then leaves again in a whirl of conflicted emotions and yearning. “Next Time” by Randy Brown has it all – a compelling love story, mysterious genetics, and historical references. The parallel with William’s lifetime and Miriam’s is achieved by each of them travelling through time/experiencing time unevenly, so Miriam’s span of time is longer. The reasons for this become apparent, forming another plot strand that adds a science fiction element to the mix.
The story is told in first person narrative, and, endearingly, William spots a potential red flag when a disorientated Miriam asks not only what day it is, but also what year. Their love story is deeply moving, and also deeply unpredictable. William must navigate a modern life while unravelling the truth behind Miriam’s comings and goings; Miriam must navigate her own family concerns and the meaning of her love for William in a completely different time. There are well-developed secondary characters that act as a foil to the central love story, which has its own twists and turns.
William is not the only one wondering about Miriam’s credentials, and there are times when the reader may need to suspend disbelief (but hey, it is time travel after all!). William’s behavior towards his modern friends is sometimes less than exemplary and Miriam’s behavior is at times somewhat demanding, but despite this, Brown has crafted two complex characters that will draw the reader in. The pacing of the novel speeds up as the pages turn, with one plot twist after another. The threats the two lovers face are authentically portrayed.
“Next Time” by Randy Brown is a time travel romance with a twist, and a great read. The storyline delves not only into William and Miriam’s relationship, but also history and science, with William also fending off shadowy threats from authorities who query Miriam’s existence. The juxtaposition between the demands of modern life and Miriam’s experiences is well-written and thought provoking, as both characters face consequences for their actions. An intriguing mix of science and emotion, the plot of “Next Time” has something for every reader.
